Jason Gonzalez
Coach and Co-Owner, CORE Fitness Galena
B.A. Exercise Sport Science and Kinesiology
Crossfit Level 1 Trainer
Crossfit Football Certified Trainer

Jason has loved sports and fitness since he can remember. As a young child and throughout high school, he was involved in football, wrestling, and baseball. After high school, he continued football collegiately for Carthage College, in Kenosha, WI, where he was a varsity letterman for 3 years and received all conference honors his senior year. Off of the field, Jason focused on learning the movements of the body and energy systems, academically. He also trained rigorously on a wide range of fitness domains, focusing on power, speed, agility, balance, and coordination through plyometric, strength, and endurance training. Ultimately, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Sport Science and Kinesiology.

After graduating college, Jason played semi-pro football for Kane County, IL, received his personal training certification, and began working as a personal trainer at a gym near his hometown. His job as a personal trainer was short-lived though, as he found his views on health and fitness seemed to be in direct contrast with the globo-gym mentality of the company he worked for. He wanted to do more than sell his clients memberships and supplements. He wanted to actually help them.

Upon leaving his job as a personal trainer and starting a more demanding corporate job, Jason became less and less active, until he stopped working out altogether. He led a more sedentary lifestyle for years and it showed. He became very out-of-shape and was not happy with himself. But, that all changed when a friend invited him to attend a fitness class with him. That was arguably one of the best decisions Jason has ever made in his life. He was hooked instantly. The fitness community was the “team” he had been missing since he left football and his desire to “not suck at everything” is what kept him coming back day in and day out.

Craig Ketelsen
Coach and Co-Owner, CORE Fitness Galena
Crossfit Level 1 Trainer
USAW Sports Performance Coach Level 1

As a high school and collegiate athlete growing up in eastern Iowa, sports had always been a huge influence in Craig Ketelsen’s life. After college, Craig had tried to maintain and elevate his level of fitness through various workout programs, both in his basement and at the local global gym. He found their structure and organization to be lacking.

Craig felt that not having a proven workout routine and usually flying solo was a great recipe for failure. With his fitness level at an all-time low, and his weight at an all-time high, he determined to attend his first CORE Fitness class in 2012.

Attending his first class, he came face to face with a couple of realities. “How had I let myself get this out of shape? Where was the athlete I used to be?” It was to be a very humbling experience, working out next to men and women twice his age that could run circles around him.

Craig made a commitment that day. With the help of new friends and the support and patience of his wife Tara, Craig has never looked back. Now, at 41 years old, his fitness level is better than ever. “CORE Fitness has helped me change my life in ways that are sometimes hard to articulate and explain. It’s more that a workout, more than just exercising. It’s training for, as CORE Fitness puts it, the ‘unknown and unknowable’. It’s proving to yourself that you can do what you thought you couldn’t. It’s the community of like minded, inspiring, everyday athletes who will never settle for average. It’s the bond that’s created with your fellow athletes after pushing through an incredibly, ridiculous workout together that no one else can understand. It’s when another athlete hits their goal and you celebrate with them like it’s your own. It’s allowing yourself to fail time and time again, so you can finally succeed. And it’s so, so much more. And I want to share that with as many people as possible.”

Craig now resides in Elizabeth, IL, with his wife, Tara, and our three amazing children, Claire, Jack, and Ava.

Cindy Meyerhofer
Crossfit Level 1 Trainer

Cindy Meyerhofer grew up and has spent most of her life in the Galena/ Elizabeth area. Her athletic background started in high school, where she participated in track. As an adult, she’d participated in various types of exercise, but had never stuck with any one thing for very long.

At age of 42, having run her first half-marathon, Cindy decided to try bodybuilding, and earned her Pro card within the first year. Her desire to learn more and help others led her to become a NASM certified personal trainer. Growing dissatisfied, she retired from bodybuilding, and began a search for something new to push herself.

After a friend introduced her to CrossFit Dubuque, Cindy quickly became hooked. She realized that fitness was more than simply lifting weights or running, and it gave her enough energy to keep up with the grandchildren. After a short six months, she realized she wanted to coach and help others reach their fitness goals.

When asked to be part of the coaching staff at CFG, Cindy immediately said yes, and her presence as a woman over the age of fifty brings new balance and perspective to CORE Fitness Galena. She has two children and four grandchildren.
